Program description
In this four-day science camp, students will use software-defined radio to track aircraft and the ISS, measure Doppler shifts, and compare direct transmissions with weak FM reflections. By combining synchronized receivers, directional antennas, orbit and flight data, and correlation analysis, we will explore passive radar and test how state-of-the-art RF devices can support high-energy physics. These techniques also connect to broader searches for dark matter, where sensitive radio-frequency instruments are used to identify extremely faint, narrow-band signals that could be produced by particles such as axions or dark photons.

Program Description
Did you know that the we can study the 'geography' of the Universe to learn about the creation of all things? When we map the 3D distribution of galaxies and gas in the Universe, we see overdensities and underdensities forming the large-scale structure of the Universe --- these are like the mountains and valleys on Earth. IPMU is the lead institute for two major instruments on the Japanese-built Subaru Telescope, Hyper-SuPrime Camera (HSC) and Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) which are powerful instruments for mapping the structure of the cosmos. In this course, we will learn how we map the large-scale distribution of the galaxies with these instruments, and also how this large-scale structure can be connected to the initial conditions of the Big Bang using computer simulations. This course will have lectures on cosmology and galaxy evolution, as well as hands-on coding exercises to learn how to simulate the Universe.
